Absolutely. You are the second person to bring something like this up about this article (the first was a friend of mine in a DM) so let me try and clarify myself. I teach guitar both privately to hobbyists and also to middle and high school students at a charter arts school, so my writing perspective and the intention of the article were largely steered at my personal student population. I did make mention that the reader should do a little research “outside of the Western European bubble” and that I was going to “sadly ignore the music of the rest of the civilized world” because I was trying to narrow the focus of the writing to make it manageable both for me to write and for the majority of my readers (who are not college music students or professional musicians) to wrap their minds around. I agree with what you are saying, but it would have diluted the point of my writing. In and of itself your reply would make a great article all on its own. My buddy's point was that the word “civilized” usually ends up being read as “white” instead of how I intended it, which was really “cultures or societies that have their own music”. My lesson learned today was about clarifying my message a bit more effectively.
